American Medical Association : atlas of the body This atlas of the body contains colour photographs and illustrations of human anatomy. Produced by the American Medical Association as an educational resource for the public, this atlas can be browsed by body systems. Body systems covered in this atlas include the brain, circulatory system, female reproductive system, respiratory system, muscles, nervous system, skin, skeletal, and urinary. Descriptive text and a glossary of anatomical terms are provided.

Atlas of human anatomy - A multimedia textbook providing a colour atlas of human anatomy, one of a large collection of online medical textbooks, authored by academic experts at the University of Iowa, and made freely available on their Web-based resource, the Virtual Hospital digital health sciences library. Published on the Web site in 2002, and aimed at health care professionals, providers and medical students, this peer-reviewed textbook contains illustrations that are representations of the human body including: bones of the skull, bones of the trunk, bones of the upper and lower limb, ligaments of the head, vertebral column, pelvis, and upper and lower limb, muscles of the face and neck, ,muscles of the torso and arms, heart and its openings, arteries of the head, neck and pelvis, brain and cerebellum, sympathetic and sensory nerves, visual and hearing apparatus, organs of the thorax and abdomen, and many more.

Atlas of human anatomy in cross section - A multimedia textbook providing a colour atlas of sectional anatomy in the axial plane, one of a large collection of online medical textbooks, authored by academic experts at the University of Iowa, and made freely available on their Web-based resource, the Virtual Hospital digital health sciences library. Published on the Web site in 1995 (revised in 1999) and aimed at health care professionals, providers and medical students, this peer-reviewed textbook is divided into seven main sections which include the head and neck; shoulders, upper arm, and upper thorax (lungs); middle thorax (heart and lungs); upper limb; lower thorax (lungs) and abdomen; pelvis, perineum, hip, and upper thigh; and lower limb. Photographic images of sections of the body are presented which corrolate with radiological images.

BBC Science and Nature : interactive body : organs - This interactive 3D jigsaw game is produced by BBC Science and Nature. The game requires the user to select an organ of the human body, rotate it to the correct position and then place it correctly on the body. The game takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and requires Flash 5.

Center for Human Simulation, University of Colorado - The Center for Human Simulation is a virtual collection of anatomical simulation applications, including high resolution digital photographic images, models, movies and dissectors which contribute to a three-dimensional (3-D) database of human male and female anatomy (the Visible Human) as derived from direct analysis of anatomical specimens and radiological imaging. This Web site provides interactive access to the images of the complete cadavers of males and females which by clicking anywhere on the coronal images, will then load the source transverse image from that level. Digital anatomist project - This project is an initiative of the University of Washington Structural Informatics Group, which consists of an interdisciplinary team of computer scientists, engineers and biologists. Anatomical information is represented by graphical models derived from cadaver and clinical imaging data and symbolic modelling of the structures and relationships that constitute the human body. The Web site provides access to four on-line interactive atlases; an interactive brain atlas, a neuroanatomy interactive syllabus, an interactive atlas of thoracic viscera and a knee atlas. Information is provided on current and past funders of the project, project description and history, and a user manual is also available. The Digital Anatomist Project is supported by the National Library of Medicine.

GetBodySmart.com : an online examination of human anatomy and physiology - GetBodySmart is an animated, interactive teaching resource covering the fields of human anatomy and physiology, aimed at both students and lecturers. The site, which has been developed by Scott Sheffield (a University lecturer with 21 years experience teaching in this field), aims to "explain the body's complex physiological interactions and illustrate its important anatomical landmarks." Topics covered include: histology and the skeletal, muscle, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and urinary systems. Recent updates to the site are detailed, and feedback is encouraged. This site requires Flash 6 Player in order to view the animations, and this can be downloaded for free by following a link from the site.

Gray's anatomy of the human body - A free online version of the classic text Gray's "Anatomy of the Human Body" (20th edition). This version of the medical reference book was revised and re-edited by Warren H. Lewis. This resource is published and made available on the Web by the Internet publisher, Bartleby.com. The book contains over 1,396 pages and is divided into 300 sections with over 1,247 illustrations (many in colour). The encyclopaedic subject index comprises 13,000 entries, with hyperlinks to the relevant pages and illustrations. This electronic book is searchable by keyword or browsable by the table of contents. Please note that this Web site contains commercial advertising.

Guide to basic anatomy - This illustrated resource concisely and accurately describes the positions of the body, the relationships of organs, and the different movements available at joints for use in clinical practice. The site will be of interest to first year medical students. Produced by the Department of Anatomy at the University of Cambridge, as part of the "Cambridge Anatomy, Functional Architecture of the Body".

Human anatomy online - This site is part of the Insight Online series produced on the Web by Intellimed International Corporation. They are a commercial software company that aim to produce educational online material to children, parents, and schools. Human Anatomy Online is a free site, and provides graphics, information and animations on ten body systems, including the skeletal system, digestive system, muscle system, lymphatic system, endocrine system, urinary system, female reproduction system, male reproduction system, cardiovascular system and the nervous system. There are graphics, animations and descriptions for each topic covered, and a search facility is also available. A Java compatible browser is required to view this site.

Illustrated encyclopedia of human anatomic variation - A multimedia textbook which is an illustrated encyclopaedia of human anatomic variation, one of the large collection of online medical textbooks, authored by academic experts at the University of Iowa, and made freely available on their Web-based resource, the Virtual Hospital digital helath sciences library. Published on the Web in 1996 (revised continuously) and aimed at health care professionals, providers and students, this peer-reviewed textbook is divided into five sections covering the muscular system; the cardiovascular system; the nervous system; endocrine, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and respiratory systems; and the skeletal system.

NetAnatomy - This educational Web site aims to teach human anatomy to students of the health professions, including undergraduate medical, health sciences, and nursing students. Subject content includes gross anatamy, radiographic anatomy and cross-sectional anatomy. Each section contains images, descriptions and tests. The authors of the site hold doctoral (Ph.D) or medical (MD) degrees. Macromedia Flash 5 is required to use this site.

Radiologic anatomy - This Web resource on radiologic anatomy is provided on the Web by the Wayne State University School of Medicine and contains a series of anatomy modules showing basic gross anatomy as depicted in radiographic studies. Cases may be browsed by the anatomic areas of the brain, chest, abdomen and pelvis. This site was supported by a grant from the Wayne State University School of Medicine Dean of the Medical School's Research in Education Fund.

SPL anatomy browser - The SPL Anatomy Browser is made available on the Web by the Surgical Planning Laboratory (SPL), which is a computer science-oriented laboratory aiming to "bring the power of computers and the information available in modern imaging technologies to the benefit a wider range of medical fields than traditionally used them". The SPL Anatomy Browser allows a hierarchical view of human anatomy to be viewed on a PC, by using Java software. The collection of anatomic data sets available include both atlas and clinical cases. The atlas cases cover the brain, ear, shoulder, abdominal, cervical spine, lumbar spine, thoracic spine, female and male pelvis, knee, and bent knee. The clinical cases cover brain tumours, sacral tumours, pelvic tumours, and kidney myelolipoma.

Vesalius interactive anatomy - Vesalius Interactive Anatomy is an interactive digital graphic resource on human anatomy, aimed at the medical and surgical communities. The image archive contains a set of images, some designed by Dr. Gary Wind, and some are photographs or radiographs. These are aimed to give doctors a free readily available resource for education and reference. They are available to download for non-commercial purposes. Also available are a set of Clinical Folios, a collection of short narratives for online study and reference, arranged by topic. They are arranged in four basic formats, narratives, thumbnails and transparencies. Vesalius is produced by Lion Reef Software, a multimedia design and production company, with Dr. Gary Wind as director for project Vesalius.

anatomy - The Anatomy list encourages informal discussion of topical educational issues relating to anatomy in particular, and medicine in general. eSkeletons project - The home page of the "Virtual Skeletons Project" an interactive educational resource provided on the Web as part of the Digital Libraries Initiative Phase 2, of the National Science Foundation. This digital library resource serves as platform for studying anatomical form and function and is aimed primarily at college and university students, even though there are sections of the Web site which will be of interest to a wider audience. The e-Skeletons Project Web site provides high quality images of the bones of a human, chimpanzee, and baboon, and labels of all muscles, articulations, and morphological features. The bones, muscles, and joints of a human skeleton can be viewed with the "Human Skeleton Viewer" and the "the Comparative Anatomy Viewer" allows the bones of humans to be compared with baboons and chimpanzees. It is important to note that each skeletal element available on this Web site has both QuickTime® and VRML animations, advice on plugins is available from the home page.
